Notes

  • When Alfred Payne was found drowned. His two son's Alfred and Christopher were sent to school in Oxford.

Kingham School was a charity school founded by Charles Edward Baring Young.

The school which still exists today and is very well to do, was back then rather less appealing.

The boys would have schooling for one week and the next week made to work on the farm and then back to schooling the next week.

Christopher later told his children stories of how they would be so hungry that they would pull carrots out of the ground whilst working on the farm and eat them to give them enough energy to keep going.

The school had a real private school feel as all the boys looked out for each other.

Alfred was nicknamed Big Cham and Christopher was Little Cham.
