MV William Wilberforce, part of the Elder Dempster fleet, was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Madeira with the loss of 3 lives.

At 21.42 hours on 9 Jan, 1943, the unescorted William Wilberforce (Master John William Andrew) was sailing from Lagos, Takoradi, Hampton Roads, to Liverpool with a 5000 ton cargo of west african produce (palm kernels, palm oil and rubber) was torpedoed and sunk by U-511 west of the Canary Islands. Three crew members were lost. The master, 41 crew members, six gunners and twelve passengers were picked up by the Spanish motor merchant Monte Arnabal.
